MAY - JUNE 2008 RULES

Entry Period: May 4 - May 31, 2008 -- Entry Form. (Best to enter before May 16)

Voting Period: May 16 - June 30, 2008.

Awards: $600 total -- 1st prize $200, 2nd $160, 3rd $120, 4th $80, 5th $40.

Contest Entry Fee: $10 for this period.

(Media) Contestants: Open to any person, group or organization, whether affiliated with UBC or not.

Voters: UBC students.

Voter Registration: Email your UBC campus-wide login ID (not password) to mark[at]votermedia.org. I forward them to UBC staff, who usually upload them Mon Wed & Fri mornings. You only need to register once for the whole year of periodic contests.

How to Vote: Log in at www.vista.ubc.ca. Click on "VOTE - VoterMedia". You vote once in each contest period.

Voting Format: Preferential voting -- you rank all the media, specifying your 1st choice contestant, 2nd choice contestant etc.

Vote Aggregation Method: The Condorcet method implemented by the program OpenSTV (with "Schwartz Sequential Dropping"). This determines a first-place winner; then that contestant is removed from consideration and the same method determines the second-place winner; etc.

Judging Criteria: Voters are free to evaluate media contestants any way they choose. Media contestants are free to appeal to voters (or not) any way they choose.

YEAR-ROUND VFM SYSTEM:

AMS Council voted to launch a voter-funded media system running continuously all year. I (Mark Latham) am funding and administering it, with oversight of the Turbo Democracy Committee. This contest runs on a periodic cycle. We adjust the rules and length of each period as we go forward.
